Rich tributes given to martyrs on Khongjom Day

Governor Gurbachan Jagat pays homage to martyrs of  Khongjom War
Imphal : Khongjom Day was observed at Khongjom Khebaching in Thoubal district on Monday to pay tributes to all those who laid their lives in the Anglo-Manipur war of 1891.
Governor Gurbhachan Jagat, chief minister O Ibobi, ministers, MPs, MLAs and others attended the function.
Floral wreaths were offered at the war memorial and personnel of Manipur Rifles gave gun salutes besides observence of rituals at Khongjom river.
A special play was presented by the artists of Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
Governor Gurbhachan Jagat said the day is observed in Manipur to mark the supreme sacrifices made by our forefathers who displayed indomitable courage and great spirit of patriotism for the cause of their motherland. The brave sons of the soil fought gallantly against the mightiest imperialist power and they never surrendered.
He added let us once again renew our pledge to protect and preserve the sovereignty and dignity of our country and strengthen the courage and spirit to challenge any forces that dare to destroy the nation. ‘Let us resolve to forget the past bitterness and differences and dedicate ourselves to bring peace and harmony in the state which will ultimately lead to the road of socio-economic progress,’ he added.
Chief minister O Ibobi Singh said, “Independence was not a gift of the British Empire but our forefathers forced them to grant Independence. Manipur lost her sovereignty after the Anglo Manipur war of 1891.”
Following the battles at various fronts, including Khongjom in which hundreds of Manipuri soldiers died, the British Empire annexed Manipur on 27 April 1891.
Hundreds of people came to pay tribute at the memorial and special security arrangements were put in place in the area. The state government declared the day as a holiday and free transport services were arranged to enable people offer tribute at the war memorial.
