Imphal: Observatory of Manipur University (The earthquake wave took about 5 minutes to reach Imphal). The seismogram recorded here shows ground vibration for more than 1 hour after the earthquake. The epicenter was located at 2.315oN/93.063oE Off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra, about 2500 km from Imphal. The depth of the earthquake as estimated is 21 km.
An after shock of magnitude 8.2M was triggered at 04 Hr 13 Min 10sec PM IST. The depth of this event is 16 km. Till now more than 22 aftershocks with magnitude larger than 5.0M were triggered. Fortunately, the epicenter of the main shock is located about 100 km to the west of the subduction fault line in the Oceanic part of the Indian plate and not in the direct subduction zone of the plates. The subduction zone is far more dangerous than stress in the oceanic plate itself. The actual greater area is the intersection in between the Indian Plate, the Australian plate and the SE Asian plate. The focal mechanism of the main shock is
confirmed to be of strike slip – meaning a little chance of tsunami. This is the largest non-damaging earthquake for a long time of this magnitude.
It may be mentioned that the focal mechanism of the great Sumatra Earthquake of 24th December 2004 with a magnitude of 9.1M was a thrust mechanism, which was responsible for generation of that devastating tsunami.
